A visionary generation

Simon at a tower raisin'

Simon graduated from McMaster University's civil engineering program in 1996 where he focused on environmental building design and building science. After a brief spell in the construction trade, Simon moved to a position with J.D. Barnes Ltd where he worked with geographic information systems for municipal hydro-electric utilities. During that time, Simon became increasingly aware of our reliance on utility companies for energy.

In the summer of 1998, instead of taking summer vacation, Simon handed in his resignation at J.D. Barnes and started Generation Solar with the help of two other young entrepreneurs and with the guidance of community partners such as COIN.

Simon is President of Generation Solar, but he also enjoys the opportunity to lead installation teams in the field. In addition, Simon has served on the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) Board of Directors and several CanSIA committees, including Chairing the Ontario Caucus that has advocated very hard on your behalf for the provincial Standard Offer Program. Simon also teaches renewable energy through the Fleming Sustainable Building program at its Haliburton campus.

JP plays on a roof-top array

Jean-Pierre graduated from Queen's University in 1994 with a degree in electrical engineering. He then worked for Siemens Milltronics Process Instruments Inc, first designing electronics and software for industrial instrumentation and then managing the development of new instrumentation products.

In 1998/99 J.P. took a leave of absence from his day job to travel in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and India. This trip fueled his interest in resource conservation and ecological sustainability and in the spring of 2000 J.P. joined the Generation Solar team. He is active in managing the business and also assists in designing and installing energy systems. He teaches renewable energy through Fleming College, sits on a number of municipal committees, and is the Past-President of the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA). J.P. hopes to one day combine his interests in renewable energy and environmental housing design in an off grid strawbale home.
