Solar water heating and pool heating
... Introduction to pool heating systems

The collectors
The thick tubes running parallel at the top and bottom of the collector are called headers.
Pool water is heated by the sun as it is pumped through the lower header, up the thin connecting tubes - called risers - and out of the top header.
Collectors are modular and are normally purchased in four foot sections, ranging from 8-12 feet high. That means you can build a system which exactly meets the requirements of your pool, and also the dimensions of your roof (or other site).
Note: For added flexibility, some manufacturers produce one foot modules.

Simply hook up the system to your existing pool pump |
In addition to the collectors you will need a 3-port valve, which can be controlled either manually or automatically.
• Automatic valve control
This device re-directs your pool water through the collectors whenever the temperature at the collectors is higher than that in the pool. This occurs in the morning, as the sun rises, and in the evening as it sets as well as throughout the day as clouds come and go in sky. An automatic control valve will maximize the effectiveness of your pool heating system and is highly recommended.
• Manual valve control
With a manual valve, this operation is performed at your own discretion.
The complete solar pool heating system can be incorporated into any above ground or inground pool, and utilizes the existing pool pump.
Similarly, existing pool heaters do not have to be abandoned, but can remain as an auxiliary supply.
