JP talks solar with Premier McGuinty |
On Tuesday, March 21st, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced North America's most progressive program to support solar energy. The program, called an Advanced Feed-in Tarrif, also called a Standard Offer Contract (SOC), will pay individual home owners, businesses, munipalities, First Nations, etc. 42 cents for every kWh of solar electricty produced, compared to the current retail price of about 6 cents. Prices paid for wind, hydro, and biofuel power are 11 cents per kWh.
This landmark program will enable anyone to be a producer of clean, green electricity and will encourage the development of a distributed electricity generation system for Ontario. Energy Minister Donna Cansfield was instrumental in the development of this program and expects it to lead to community action and the development of a dynamic renewable energy indsutry in Ontario.

Dr. David Suzuki commended Premier McGuinty for the program which firmly puts Ontario amongst the world leaders in their support for community renewable energy. Similar programs in Europe have created thousands of jobs and put millions of kWh of green electricity onto local energy grids.

The Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA) was instrumental in the development of this program, including the involvement of renowned wind expert Paul Gipe. The Canadian Solar Industry Association worked closely with OSEA, including the efforts of Generation Solar's Simon Boone, who Minister Cansfield highlighted for his contribution to the effort at the announcement on Tuesday.
The announcement was made at the facility of Photowatt, formerly Spheral Solar Power, an Ontario photovolataic manufacturer.
